Day 5 Recap: Canada and New Jersey win; Curacao and Hawaii advance to Saturday

On another beautiful California day, we had two consolation games in the morning, followed by two elimination games.

At the early 9am game, New Jersey got their first win of the tournament over the Czech Republic team by a score of 13-2. Carlos Serrano, Johnathan Arce, Mekhi Sanchez, Michael Santiago each had three hits for the New Jersey team, while both Johnathan Arce and Michael Santiago hit home runs. Five different pitchers held the Czech team to 7 hits and only one earned run.

In the noon game, Alberta, Canada got their second win of the tournament with a 6-5 win over the squad from Houston, Texas. Canada only had six hits, but was helped by 8 walks issued by the Texas pitchers. Ty Weavers led the offense, going 3-3 with a home run and double. On the mound, Seth Gurr and Josh Kabayama combined to limit Texas to only two hits.

At the 3pm game, Curacao faced Puerto Rico in an elimination game. Curacao broke open a 1-0 game with 4 runs in the fourth and another 3 runs in the sixth to eliminate Puerto Rico by a final score of 8-1. Je-andrick Lourens led the offense with a home run, 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored. Klevert Martina and Dionlix Ortela also had two hits. On the mound, Je-andrick Lourens pitched 6 1/3 innings, yielding only 4 hits and no earned runs.

In the late game, the host CA District 57 team from Danville was looking to advance to the US Championship game for the first time at this World Series. However, they ran into a very talented team from Hawaii, and ultimately lost 10-0. Hawaii had 13 hits for the game, led by Haku Dudoit’s 4-4 effort with 3 runs scored, as well as Dawson Tokishi’s 2-hit, 5 RBI performance. On the mound, Tiger Caulford and Jarrett Harper combined on a dominating one-hitter.

Curacao will face South Korea in the International Championship game on Saturday August 6th at 1pm PST
Hawaii will face Florida in the US Championship game on Saturday August 6th at 5pm PST
